El Gouna Community
More Than a Resort
It is news to no one that El Gouna's hotels, services and other attractions make it the perfect holiday location. Some people don't realize, however, that El Gouna is also a full-fledged town, home to a creative and diverse community of entrepreneurs, artists, environmentalists, and sports enthusiasts. El Gouna's mix of talented residents gives the town an eclectic and sophisticated international flavor, and its centralized, well-organized management keeps things running smoothly and contributes to the close-knit feel of the community. These factors, along with the town's award-winning architecture and well-thought design, are the things that make El Gouna such a unique and desirable place to visit or live.
Much of El Gouna's visual appeal stems from the philosophy of OHD, the resort's parent company, to integrate architecture, interior design, and landscape to create an aesthetically unified whole. The resort's interior and exterior designs contain a perfect blend of traditional and modern elements and are the result of the dedication and work of an impressive list of prestigious architects. American Michael Graves, who has been the recipient of many of the architectural world's highest awards, is responsible for designing several of El Gouna's hotels as well as its Golf Club and Golf Villas, and the earth tones and sea-color splashes that characterize these projects help to set the tone of the resort. Italian architect Alfredo Fredadesigned El Gouna's attractive Marina town, the first of its kind on the Red Sea, as well as the popular and exclusive Tuscany-style Hill Villas. Shahab Mazhar, a prominent Egyptian architect, was inspired by Mediterranean influences in his creation of the beachfront White Villas, and the beautiful Nubian Villas are the work of the award-winning architects Ramy El-Dahan and Ahmad Hamdy, who also hail from Egypt.
Orascom Hotels & Development remains actively involved in the management of its projects long after the builders have gone home. In El Gouna, OHD is responsible not only for providing and maintaining top-quality hotels and residences, but for the day-to-day maintenance and upkeep of the city's power grid, water works, roads, school, hospital, golf course, and marina. Consistent with the company's commitment to providing every guest with a hassle-free and memorable vacation, OHD takes its responsibilities of maintaining a township very seriously. By delegating day-to-day hotel services to respected international operators, OHD is free to actively promote and maintain the resorts themselves, creating a two tiered system of quality control insuring continual adherence to international standards of excellence. OHD owns and manages El Gouna's marina, golf course, airport, school, and hospital, and provides electricity, treated running water, telecommunication services, transportation, and security for all residents.
Golf in El Gouna
Gene Bates and Fred Couples designed the El Gouna course with every level of golfer in mind, from the beginner looking to try out the game for the first time to the advanced golfer playing the tournament circuit. The course boasts three different tees, carefully placed bunkers, lagoons, and desert rough, all designed to challenge the individual at his or her own level.
The Golf Club offers full rental services for clubs, trolleys and electric carts; tee-off times must be reserved in advance. A 45 handicap is mandatory, with proof required. For non-golfers, don't miss the weekly Golf Introduction with PGA Professionals on the driving range.
If you're looking to relax after the game, the course Clubhouse and Fitness Club offer a well-equipped gymnasium, three plunge pools, a sauna, a beautiful Turkish bath, and massage services. Additionally, the on-site Angsana Spa offers professional treatments.
The Terrace 19th Hole Bar, located in the Clubhouse, serves drinks and light snacks, while the La Rotisserie Restaurant in the Clubhouse tower offers fine French dining with a panoramic view of the course. In the course's Pro Shop you will find unique souvenirs, exclusive accessories, high-quality clothing, handmade leather articles and more.
Diving in El Gouna
The heated pools and calm reefs of El Gouna are the perfect place for the beginning diver to hone his or her skills before moving on to the Red Sea's highly-acclaimed reefs and wrecks. Experienced divers drawn to the region to explore those same sites will find that El Gouna's diving centers have plenty to offer them as well. The resort's various dive centers offer a complete range of diving education, including PADI diving certification, from beginner to professional level. The Dive Tribe, a five-star instructor development center located in the resort town, is also a certified National Geographic Diving Center.
Abu Nuhas Reef
This aptly-named reef (Abu Nuhas translates as "father of bad luck") is littered with the wrecks of ships that strayed off course and collided with the shallow coral. Home to great aquatic life and includes the wrecks of Giannis D, Chrisoula K, and Kimon M. Level: Advanced. Distance: 2.5 hours.
The north side of this reef offers canyons full of table corals coming out of the reef wall; lobsters are common. Great for night-dives. Level: Medium/Advanced. Distance: 1 hr.
This reef is populated by red-tooth triggerfish and African smoke angelfish. Glassfish are also present in all the caves and crevices. Level: Medium/Advanced. Distance: 2 hrs.
Sunk by German aircraft in 1941, this freighter's cargo is still virtually intact and includes railway locomotives, bren gun carriers, trucks motorcycles and a host of ammunition. The wreck is home to bat fish, jacks, barracudas, surgeon fish, and nudibranchs, as well as rabbit fish graze the hull.
The Rosalie Moller
Bombed just two days after the Thistlegorm, this sunken wreck is in pristine condition and hosts prolific sea life and different types of corals.
Other interesting wrecks include the British steamer Carnatic, which was loaded with wine and gold when it met its doom on Abu Nuhas Reef in 1869, as well as the Markus, a Greek vessel that sank in the same vicinity over a century later.
Diving in El Gouna can be a family affair. Ask your dive center of choice about diving programs and courses tailored for kids, which include PADI Bubble Maker, Discover Scuba Diving, Junior Scuba Diving, and a Junior Open Water Diving and Snorkeling course. Special discounts are available for young children
The opportunity to explore the underwater realm surrounding El Gouna is also extended to guests with reduced mobility. Many disabled persons are able to complete a standard scuba diver course, with minor adjustments as necessary, depending on the type of disability. All divers, regardless of whether they have a disability or not, must complete a medical questionnaire, and those with a handicap are required to produce a medical certificate stating that they are fit to dive. To ensure that everything runs smoothly, it is advisable to get in touch with the dive center and discuss individual needs in advance.
Most of El Gouna's dive schools are prepared to accommodate divers with special needs, and some have gone the extra mile to develop
facilities tailored specifically for divers with physical disabilities.

Boasting multiple marinas, comprehensive services, and an aesthetically unified harbor town designed by Italian architect Alfredo Freda, El Gouna has quickly become a favorite docking place for pleasure craft traversing the Red Sea.
Abu Tig Marina
The first purpose built yacht marina in the Red Sea, Abu Tig is in a league of its own among Red Sea marinas both for the high standard of services it provides as well as for its matchless backdrop: a harbor town that is not only architecturally praiseworthy for its Yemeni- influenced style but also offers El Gouna's most exclusive shopping and dining. A number of lodging options are also available in the marina, which houses several hotels ranging from intimate inns to a four-star beachfront establishment.
Abu Tig serves as an ideal home port and a convenient stop-over point for vessels of all sizes both sail and motor, whether simply cruising the great variety of offshore coral reefs and islands in the Red Sea or traveling onwards to the Mediterranean Sea or the Indian Ocean. An ever popular winter base, where sailors can make the most of a reasonable cost of living, it is also the harbor of choice for several international yacht rallies, such as the Med-Red, Vasco de Gama, and Blue Water rallies.
Abu Tig Marina Extension
The expansion of the existing marina is already underway; a new and larger North Basin for the Abu Tig Marina was started early in 2006 and will be finished in 2008. This new extension will cater to the rapidly-expanding mega yacht market by offering berthing for vessels up to 60 meters in length.
Abydos, El Gouna's second marina, has a capacity of 40 vessels and harbors El Gouna's many diving boats. It offers dry dock and repair services, with a ship lift for vessels up to 19 meters, and it has a diesel fuel station, electricity lines, channel-6 VHF and a maintenance center.
